Marjorie Marilyn Bendle (nee Munn) passed away peacefully at Drayton Valley hospital on May 1, (May Day), 2020.
In Marilyn’s own words, she was “more of a dreamer than a doer”. She always felt fragile after a childhood barbed wire accident that resulted in a significant eye injury, and later, an illness which caused her to miss a year of school. As a result of her eye injury, many things were difficult, from typing to driving, and it also gave her an unusual look, with one green eye and one blue eye. Her childhood home was a farm a few kilometres from Wizard Lake. (Despite feeling fragile, Marilyn was a good swimmer and once swam across that lake). Her family is known in the community for the generations of Munns living there and for their civic involvement.
Being visually impaired did not stop Marilyn from being an avid reader, and she especially enjoyed Scottish historical romances. She will also be remembered for her creative sewing of colourful outfits, complete with scarves for the girls, which were appreciated more or less by her young children, her vibrant decorating schemes with multi coloured painted doors and red velvet curtains (home décor slam at the time) and her love of coffee, cigarettes and salted peanuts. She played the accordion and days-long games of Yahtzee. Marilyn was also a great crib player and enjoyed crib tournaments. She excelled at accounting, worked as an administrative assistant before marriage, was a “farmerette” for many years and a member of the Canadian Royal Purple service club.
Marilyn was not fragile: she withstood and rebuilt her life several times. She suffered much grief, being widowed four times with spouses Peter Grenwich, (father of her six children), Robert La Croix, Allen Turnquist and Ray Bendle. She was also predeceased by her parents William and Marjorie Munn, brother Rod Munn, brother-in law Gary Gough and sister-in- law Margo Munn.
She is mourned by her children: Laurie Andrews (Jeff) ; Darcy Grenwich (Sandra); David Grenwich (Lorna); Jenine Safioles (Bart), Leanna Grenwich (Nathan) and Darwin Grenwich (Denix); her sister Barbara Gough, brother Richard (Dick) Munn, and sister-in-law Judy Munn, her thirteen grandchildren, twenty one great-grandchildren as well as other family members and friends.
A small, private memorial for Marilyn will be held at a later date.
